From the Principal's Desk

Welcome to week 3! 

I am very excited to announce that I will be continuing in the role of Acting Principal, end of Term 1.

The Year 6 Graduation Celebration will be held at the Mackay Surf Club. The event is scheduled for Wednesday 6^th December.  The cost is $17.50 and it needs to be paid in cash.  Please use the envelopes in the office to deposit cash in the green box.

I would like to acknowledge our MOB students.  They performed on Saturday 14^th October and were awarded a Sliver Trophy.  Congratulations to Mrs Henderson, Miss Menzies and the ensemble students.

Thank you to our hardworking P and C Committee for running the Sausage Sizzle on Saturday 14^th October. 

During this week, in term 4 and in week 3 and 4, our students and staff will be reviewing our behaviour expectations.  Please help support all the staff at Slade Point and remind your child about being respectful.  

1. Please listen to adults and follow instructions in a calm and respectful way;
2. Listening on parade is very important. We always follow the 5 L’s for respectful behaviour – Listen, Look, Lips, Lap, legs;
3. Please remind your child about listening to staff during transitions. It is great that most students face the teacher and listen when staff are trying to give clear instructions and organise safe transitions.                                     
   

Chappy Peter and Aunty Wave have started to organise options for book packs in 2024.  With Chappy Lisa no longer at our school and our strong connection with the Multicultural Lions Club still in place, our school will still be supporting book packs and stationary supplies in 2024. 

We are confirming what this will look like over the next few weeks.  Please watch this space for more updates.  There will be Book Packs available for Preps and we are organising some vouchers for older grades from Office Works Mackay.  A price for the Book Pack and ordering processes for the vouchers /packs will be organised over the next few weeks.  Aunty Waveney and Chappy Peter as looking into Office Works for stationary vouchers.

Year 5 parents, carers and students, please note that Leadership Information and the school process will be forwarded shortly. 

Miss Jade will be looking out for an email from Wakakirri on 18th October.  This is when the results for each school from our region will received notification about State and National Awards.

Final camp payment - is $74 if you have paid the $50 deposit already.

Due Date for final payment – was Friday, October 13^th .

If you have any further questions regarding camp, please see Miss Usher or Miss Blackman.  You can email or ring the school office and ask to speak to your child’s teacher.  You can also contact a staff member at the pick-up gate in the afternoon or see a staff member in the UCA each morning.

We will be participating in Awakening Spirits, 18^th October at the MECC. This will be an opportunity for our students to perform their dance for other schools, parents and carers.  All of our parents, carers and community are invited.

Uncle Patrick has informed the school that parents, community and carers can book online free tickets. The link process is: -

Miss Jade will be assisting Uncle Patrick with ensuring our dancers are ready to perform on the 18^th October. Thank you to Miss Jade for her dancing expertise and for helping our students.

Students will now be transported to and from the MECC for rehearsals on the Wednesday 18^th October at 2 pm.  Students will now be staying at the MECC.  They will be given an afternoon snack and water with dinner be served to all of students before they perform at 5:30 pm.

Parents are responsible for picking up their child from the front of the MECC near the front entrance.  Please notify a staff member when you arrive to transport your child home. The running order for Awakening Sprits is below.

We are seeking all Prep students for 2024.  You are invited to Slade Point State School’s getting to know you sessions or they are better known as READY SET PREP.

We would like to help transition your child into their first year of schooling and allow you the opportunity to find out how you can participate in their learning.

A 4-week program plus a parents and carers meeting is being held at Slade Point State School.  We are strongly encouraging a parent to attend with their child.

The dates are all Thursdays-time: 1:45 pm-2.30pm:

1. 19th October/26^th October; play on the playground and sandpit: craft in the P-1 classroom;
2. Concluding, Thursday 26th October
3. Transition Day at Slade Point State School for K-to Prep-28^th November Tuesday. Meet in the UCA just before 9:30 am.
4. Interviews held, 9th and 16th November. Start booking now-Ring 49657333

The Parent Information meeting will be 2nd November at 2:00 pm.  It will be held  in the P-1 Room.  This program is open to ALL 2024 Prep aged students.  Children must be born between 1st July 2018-30th June 2019

Term Four Save this Date: -

1. Ready Set Prep19th October and concluding Thursday 26^th October;
2. Awakening Spirits 18^th October- 5:30 pm at the MECC- Parents and Community are all welcome (parents and carers and community). Tickets are free and please book using the link above.  A reminder for students performing.  They will stay at the MECC on Wednesday 18^th after their 2pm rehearsal.  PCYC are transporting our students for free to the rehearsal (from school) and all food including, snacks, water, dinner/tea will be supplied at the MECC.
3. Safety Circus in week 5, Monday 30^th October in the hall from 11:45 am. Year 2 and Year 2’s from the 2-3 class;
4. Year 5 and Year 6 Camp- Week 8 – Wednesday 22^nd, Thursday 23^rd, Friday 24^th November Seaforth Outdoor Recreation Centre; Donations for morning and afternoon students are kindly requested to bring (Boys-Fruit) (Girls-Baked Items/biscuits). The students will be leaving on Wednesday and arriving back on Friday at 2:50 pm. Final payment was due by Friday 13^th October;
5. Community Breakfast – week 6 - 7^th November;
6. Elders Breakfast – week 3 – 17^th October, 9:30 am in the UCA. Year 6 students will be participating in a very exciting project with our Elders.  Thank you, Fiona Bobongie, Randal Ross from (NWRH – Townsville).  More about this program in upcoming weeks.
7. Week 5- 30^th October, Year 5 Leadership Applications will be handed out to all year 5 students to take home and discuss their 2024 Leadership intentions with their families or carers.
8. Week 5- 1st November Leadership afternoon activities from 1:30-2:50 pm for all year 5 students.
9. Week 5- 3^rd November Leadership Applications are due back- handed in to Miss Usher.
10. Week 6-7^th November shortlisting and students notified;
11. Week 6- 8^th November workshop for shortlisted students to write speeches (lunch supports 9^th -13^th November week 7);

Mackay Orchestra & Band Festival

A big congratulations to our string ensemble who competed in the Mackay Orchestra and Band Festival on the weekend. The students performed two pieces, and were awarded a silver by the adjudicator. A great achievement! The event runs over two days and Slade Point were up very first in the program – fortunately leaving no time for nerves! This is the ensemble’s third public performance this year and they keep getting better each time. A big thank you to Miss Menzies for leading the ensemble and helping the students to constantly improve their playing. The ensemble’s final performance for the year will be at Slade Point’s annual Christmas concert.

Catch up from Mrs Shaw

It has been my honour to have had the oppertunity to be the Principal of Slade Point State School 2019-2022.  As you are aware I have taken leave in 2023 to relocate over 1000km away to support the care of my father.  It has been wonderfulto be able to live with and support my Dad.  Ihave extended my leave for 2024.

I would also like to take this oppertunity to acknowledge and celebrate the wonderful staff of Slade Point State School.  My colleagues continue to support students and their continued successes everyday.  In August I thoroughly enjoyed a quick catch up with staff, students and a few parents/caregivers.

I actively follow the Slade Point Facebook page and enjoy seeing student and school accomplishments and events.  Enjoy Term 4 with children completing their current year, transitioning from Kindy to Prep and year 6 students getting ready for High School and the exciting events for this Term.  I have included some photo's of life on the farm.
