Welcome to Week 9
Principal messages
It is with great excitement that I am able to inform all of our school community that work on the new year 2-3 + prep playground has begun. The company ‘Ozscape’, was here to start work on Tuesday 19th. Our year 2 and 3 students will still have soccer, but it will be on the grass in front of C Block. The students will also have access to sporting equipment. The UCA will be used for handball, skipping and drawing. They will eat under A block as normal and have 2nd break play under A block to ensure they have variety while the playground is being built. Ozscape has indicated they may be completed by Sunday 24th March.
Thank you to all parents, carers and the community who supported our Annual Cross-Country afternoon. It was also an exciting first time for our Fun Run! There were a lot of parents watching and enjoying the children participating in the Fun Run. Thank you to Miss Roberts who prepared notes communicating changes to our Cross-Country format ahead of time. Our younger students did have a lot of fun.
Miss Roberts did an amazing job of organising the day! Thank you to all staff who also assisted on the day.
Our P & C sold cold drinks at the Cross Country. Thank you to all of our amazing parents for giving up their time to help. We also had lots of helpers with the tents. Thank you to Chappy who works tirelessly and was also helping with packing up the tents.
To ensure we have the final important events clearly communicated to all parents, carers and the community please note that our Sladey Celebration Movie and PJ Day is now on Wednesday 27th March. This will allow for our Touch Football Gala Day participants to join in for Sladey Celebration Movie Day.
We are definitely heading into some really exciting activities for all students at Slade Point State School. Please get your craft gear ready to make a special Easter Hat or Bonnet for the last day of school. All children from Prep and including year 3 will be parading an Easter Hat or Bonnet. Our upper school children will be assisting with the parade and our C & K Kindy Kids will be joining the parade.
The Easter Hat Parade starts at 1:30 pm in the UCA. There will be a marked parade area and the students in prep year 3 will be able to line up on their normal yellow lines. Our year 4’s will watch from their veranda and the year 5 and year 6 students will sit with the lower school classes to help with the parade.
Our student council will come to all classes and model some Easter Hats and Bonnets that students can make at home.
Everyone has a role in supporting positive school communication with staff in the school. Please remember to see your child’s classroom teacher if you have any concerns or questions about things that happen at school. We have two blackboards positioned at the entries to the school. These black boards display dates and times of important school events.
Any problems that you may have regarding the school can be discussed and solved quickly, if we all work in partnership. Please remember that some problems can take more time to solve, but staff will always try to work on resolving any issues.
Please make special note that our Parent-Carer and Teacher Interviews will be held in Week 10 on Monday 25th March. A booking sheet and note from your child’s teacher will have already been sent home. Please check your child’s bag or ask your child to collect a spare note from their classroom teacher if you can’t locate the piece of paper. To make a booking to speak to your child’s teacher please ensure that this note is returned to your child’s teacher. These interviews will be held in the library. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain an update about your child’s progress for the term and to find out how to support your child’s learning.
A special reminder about Slade Point State School will be hosting a Super Playgroup on the 22nd March, starting at 9 am and concluding at 11 am. The Super Playgroup will be in our hall and on the grounds around this area. Please support this special event. Aunty Wave has more information. As our Super Playgroup comes closer, our school leaders and Student Council members will be asked to help out on the morning of 22nd March.
Due to the Super Playgroup being set up on some of the oval near the hall some adjustments to playing will be made just on Friday 22nd March.
Our older year 4, year 5 and year 6 students, will be playing in the UCA area on Friday 22nd March. They can also access the library. They will eat in the UCA as normal.
Our year 2 and 3 children will be playing near and under A block. The Prep and Year 1 children will be playing near the prep building and eating in their normal area. They will eat under A block as normal.
Our PBL message for week 9 and week 10 – Be a Learner
Be a Learner and always follow routines and listen to feedback about learning in class.
NAPLAN has nearly been completed and I would like to thank Ms A for all of her hard work with organising this important National Testing process in our school.
Our Year 3 and Year 5 students have participated in the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents for encouraging their children to always do their best. Students are currently undertaking further class assessments and it is always important that they try their hardest and rise to the challenge.
It is wonderful to see more children receiving their 25 tokens and a certificate on parade. Congratulations!!! Our new Sladey Supermarket will be opening soon. This will be an opportunity for your child to use all of their extra tokens to buy something special from the Sladey Supermarket. They will receive a 25 token voucher (for 25 tokens) that can be spent at the supermarket. Please note, our badges will still remain the same and students will continue to receive badges for their tokens. This will not change.
On Tuesday we had a lovely Community Breakfast. I would like to once again thank Chappy Peter and Aunty Waveney for all of their help and organising this important event in our school.
Please support the Chaplain Easter Raffle. This raffle will raise money and funds for our school Chaplain - Peter Borg. All funds go back into supporting the funding of Chappy Peter’s role in our school. The raffle will be organised by Chappy Peter and the Student Council. The 1st prize is a BBQ (provided by the P and C). The Meat Tray has been donated by the Sea Breeze Tavern. There will be Easter Eggs for smaller prizes. Tickets will be $2 or three tickets for $5.

Clean up Schools Day
The children from Prep to Year 6 all participated in our annual Clean Up Schools Day activities. We are happy to report that the Slade Point Community and Slade Point SS were generally pretty clean and tidy. The most common rubbish round were aluminium cans and pieces of plastic. Some of the unusual things that were found were soft toys, old broken and rusty crab pots, a golf ball, and the wheels from a skateboard. A huge thank you to everyone for your support for our Clean Up Day and helping us with our guardianship of the Great Barrier Reef.
