Principal's Messages
Welcome to Week 9
Principal messages
At Slade Point we are always looking for ways to provide our students with opportunities that will enrich their literacy development. This year we have organised for students from prep to year 6 to attend the Whitsunday Voices Literacy Festival during week 1 of term 3.
As places for the festival are limited students will be allocated a seat on a first in bases. Therefore, the earlier your child/ren returns the form the more likely they will be able to attend.
Students will be attending the following sessions with staff supervising and attending from Slade Point State School:
Year 3 and 4 James Foley 9:15am 25 places
James Foley will have everyone on their feet! You may know his multi-award-winning picture book Stellarphant, or his other graphic novels Brobot, Dungzilla, Gastronauts and Chickensaurus. His latest graphic novel series, Secret Agent Mole, follows Max Mole, Helena Hippo, and June Bug, for whom no mission is too dangerous, or ridiculous!
In his hilarious sessions you’ll find out how you too could make the journey from a wannabe to a professional author-illustrator... in just 3452 easy steps! As an ambassador for Books in Homes and Room to Read, James’ passion and dedication to children’s literature is evident in both his books and high-energy delivery.
Year 5 and 6 Nick Earls 12:15pm 25 places
Nick Earls is an international best-selling author of 28 books for adults, teenagers and children. Five of his books have been adapted into stage plays and two into feature films. His most recent book is the novel Empires. In his entertaining and energetic session for middle grades, Nick poses the questions…Where do our words come from? Why do we spell them the way we do? Why is English the weird and complicated language it is? This talk introduces Lexi and Al from Nicks’ Word Hunters books, and gives students the tools to be word hunters themselves with a new way of thinking about language and how it works, including the evolution of language and the factors behind it.school will cover the cost of buses. We are asking parents to pay $8 per child to attend this.
Please complete the permission form attached and return with $8 to the office by Friday the 23rd of June.
We are continuing to provide excellent opportunities for your child at Slade Point. Prep to Year 2 students will be watching a puppet show about Dinosaurs on the Thursday 11th July. Some specific timeslots for the show are below: -
Date: Thursday 11th July
1st Show is at 10:00 – 10:45 am
2nd Show is at 11:30 am -12:15 pm
3rd Show is at 12:15 to 1:00pm
A Dinosaur Adventure is a Storytime that takes the audience back 95 million years into
the past. Starting with a storybook reading, the audience members then make a magical
wish which transports them to the late Cretaceous period where they meet several baby
dinosaurs. They must quickly return to the present before the Mummy dinosaurs catch
them and upon their return, the audience learn about tools used by palaeontologists’ and
see real fossils up close.

- Under 8’s- 11:30-1:00 pm All community, parents and carers are invited and younger siblings. A special Under 8’s event is being planned for Wednesday June 19th. This will be in collaboration with Mackay Children and Family Centre.
The Queensland Government remains committed to ensuring the safety of students travelling to and from schools and will install flashing school zone signs (FSZS) in 100 school zones across Queensland, during the 2024–25 financial year. It gives me great pleasure to announce that Slade Point State School will be receiving FSZS in the Wren Street school zone.
The school will be contacted several weeks prior to the installation and before the end of June 2025. Installation of FSZS at Slade Point State School will improve visibility of the school zone and serve as an active reminder for motorists to slow down when children are out and about.
Several important factors are considered when assessing school zones for flashing lights, such as crash history, traffic volumes, pedestrian movements, the speed limit and visibility.
I am also kindly reminding motorists to slow down when driving near our school.
I would like to formally acknowledge Jade Ford for her work in this road safety space. We have successfully, as mentioned above, be receiving flashing school zone signs.
Another big Congratulations to all of our Cumberland Sports representatives. Best wishes on your big day.
Our NAIDOC celebration date is now going to be in the first week of school term 3. The date is Tuesday 9th July. Mrs Adjrun will be preparing a timetable for all community, parents and carers to attend. This change is due to a longer school year in 2024 and NAIDOC dates aligning with term 3.
Report Cards will be handed out in the last week of school on Wednesday, June 19th.
On behalf of Slade Point State Primary School, I would like to thank Donna Jackson who is the Senior Project Officer for Pioneer Catchment & Landcare Group Inc. Donna has organised this wonderful opportunity for our year 2, year 3 and our year 2-3 classes. Donna will be visiting classrooms on the 17th June.
I would also like to acknowledge Leah Scoble who will also be running some activities in the school on 17th June. Leah works with Wetland Walkabout and it is exciting that she is also going to be working with our year 2, year 3 and year 2-3 classes.
I would like to acknowledge all the support that Uncle Patrick gives to our school. He has confirmed further dance dates with Slade Point State School.

Our Slade Point State School PBL message for the next 2 weeks –Be a Learner. Children are working hard on assessments in class. If your child arrives at school after 8:45, they will need to enter through the office to receive a late slip to take to their teacher.
UPDATING PARENT CONTACT INFORMATION:
It is extremely important that family details such as address and mobile phone numbers are correct and up to date, so that you can be contacted if your child is unwell or needing medical attention. It is also important that we are aware of all medical conditions.
Please contact the school office to update your details.
EXCURSION PERMISSIONS:
A new process will commence from next term for all school excursions.
1. You will be advised of the excursion via the newsletter, QParents or a paper note (or all of these).
2, If you wish your child to attend, you will need to give written permission to the school. You can either respond on QParents or return the paper form to the class teacher.
3. You will then be invoiced for the excursion.
4. Once payment is received, your child can participate in the excursion.
This is the new process that the Department of Education requires. If you only give verbal permission, this is NOT sufficient. If you give permission but do not pay, your child WILL NOT participate.
Please be patient with us while we try to find our way through this new process.
We are encouraging parents to connect to QParents, as this is the quickest way to see excursion information.
QParents
The QParents portal will provide secure online access to your child's student information in one place, anywhere, anytime. To find out more, go to https://education.qld.gov.au/parents-and-carers/school-information/qparents
We will be putting all excursion permissions through this portal. You will be able to give permission on QParents.
This will then mean that you will be invoiced for the excursion. Once payment is received, your child can attend the excursion.
