Principal's Desk
Welcome to Week 1
Principal messages
Welcome Back to an exciting term three! Slade Point State School continues to offer endless academic, sporting and cultural opportunities for all students.
This year the School Opinion Survey will be open to students, parents and staff between 22 July and 16 August 2024 with invitation emails being distributed the week starting 15 July 2024. I encourage all parents and students to fill in the survey and remember the exciting and wonderful academic, sporting and cultural opportunities our school offers.
On behalf of students, staff and community I would like to sincerely thank Monique Duncan for her support as our long-standing Crossing Supervisor. Monique has been a part of our Slade Point State School community for over 20 years. She has always supported our school. Recently Monique presented a special ANZAC Day talk to classes in the school. Congratulations to our new Crossing Supervisor 'Vera Voiges'. Welcome to the Sladey Family.
Afternoon Tunes will be held on July 30th in the hall. We will have choir and ensemble perform. The beginner strings will perform again as they have also been entered them in the beginner section of the Eisteddfod. Due to the MECC undergoing repairs and the Eisteddfod being held in different venues, both the String Ensemble and Beginner Strings are playing on Sunday 11th August at Mackay Northern Beaches SHS.
Please note: that lost property was collected at the end of term three. All items that were not named have been donated to local charity organisations.
At Slade Point we are always looking for ways to provide our students with opportunities that will enrich their literacy development. This year we have organised for students from prep to year 6 to attend the Whitsunday Voices Literacy Festival during week 1 of term 3.
As places for the festival are limited students will be allocated a seat on a first in basis. Therefore, the earlier your child/ren return the form and payment, the more likely they will be able to attend. Students are not permitted to attend if payment is not received.
Students will be attending the following sessions with staff supervising and attending from Slade Point State School:
Year 3 and 4 James Foley 9:15am 25 places
James Foley will have everyone on their feet! You may know his multi-award-winning picture book Stellarphant, or his other graphic novels Brobot, Dungzilla, Gastronauts and Chickensaurus. His latest graphic novel series, Secret Agent Mole, follows Max Mole, Helena Hippo, and June Bug, for whom no mission is too dangerous, or ridiculous!
In his hilarious sessions you’ll find out how you too could make the journey from a wannabe to a professional author-illustrator... in just 3452 easy steps! As an ambassador for Books in Homes and Room to Read, James’ passion and dedication to children’s literature is evident in both his books and high-energy delivery.
Year 5 and 6 Nick Earls 12:15pm 25 places
Nick Earls is an international best-selling author of 28 books for adults, teenagers and children. Five of his books have been adapted into stage plays and two into feature films. His most recent book is the novel Empires. In his entertaining and energetic session for middle grades, Nick poses the questions…Where do our words come from? Why do we spell them the way we do? Why is English the weird and complicated language it is? This talk introduces Lexi and Al from Nicks’ Word Hunters books and gives students the tools to be word hunters themselves with a new way of thinking about language and how it works, including the evolution of language and the factors behind it.
We are continuing to provide excellent opportunities for your child at Slade Point. Prep to Year 2 students will be watching a puppet show about Dinosaurs on the Thursday 11th July. Some specific timeslots for the show are below: -
Date: Thursday 11th July
1st Show is at 10:00 – 10:45 am (Prep)
2nd Show is at 11:30 am -12:15 pm (Year 2 and Year 2’s from year 2-3)
3rd Show is at 12:15 to 1:00pm (Prep-1)
A Dinosaur Adventure is a Storytime that takes the audience back 95 million years into
the past. Starting with a storybook reading, the audience members then make a magical
wish which transports them to the late Cretaceous period where they meet several baby
dinosaurs. They must quickly return to the present before the Mummy dinosaurs catch
them and upon their return, the audience learn about tools used by palaeontologists’ and
see real fossils up close.
Our NAIDOC celebration date was Tuesday 9th July. Thank you, Mrs Adjrun, for preparing a timetable for all community, parents and carers to attend. Thank you to Miss Blackman and Aunty Vik for presenting inspiring speeches. Thank you to parents and community who watched our march.

School Opinion Survey
School Opinion Survey for 2024
KEY INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS
• Students will be sent a survey invitation in week 2 of term 3, containing their unique link to the survey.
• The survey invitation will be sent to a student’s school email account.
• The survey invitation email uses the subject line: School Opinion Survey of students 2024 ; check junk email folders if it can’t be found.
• Do not influence student’s opinions.
• Logins and passwords are not required; just click the link in the email and complete the survey.
Additional Information
• In-scope students – ALL students in Years 5, 6, 8 and 11 – will be invited via email, using
email addresses from OneSchool.
• The student survey officially opens on 22 July and closes on 16 August.
• It is recommended that schools advise students well in advance that they will receive an email
invitation from the department, and inform them if they will be completing the survey in class
time or at their own leisure.
• It takes some time to send invitations to all in-scope students across Queensland. Invitations
will be sent in week 2 of term 3.
• While the survey is voluntary, students should be encouraged to complete it, as the more
students who complete the survey, the more meaningful the data will be for schools.
• Students are not to be placed under any duress to provide favourable responses and all
responses must represent the honest opinions of students.
• A Supplementary survey has been created for use when a student has not received or cannot
locate their invitation
EQIDs are validated to ensure that students only respond once, please
note that responses with an invalid EQID are not accepted during processing.
SOS for Parents and Caregivers
• Families with one or more enrolled children at your school will receive one invitation to
complete the survey. The parent/caregiver to receive the invitation is selected based
on information and email addresses in OneSchool.
• Participation is by invitation only.
• Invitations will be sent over a number of days in the week beginning Monday 15 July.
It is recommended that schools advise parents/caregivers in advance that they will
receive an email from the department. The survey will close on 16 August.
• DO NOT share any survey link from an invitation email. Each link is unique and can only
be used once. One parent/caregiver per family will receive their survey link via email. No
logins or passwords are needed, parents/caregivers can simply click on the link and
complete the survey.
• The survey invitation email uses the subject line: School Opinion Survey for
parents/caregivers, 2024; parents/caregivers should check junk email folders if it can’t be
found.
• No involvement from the school is required, but promoting SOS through the usual
communication channels (e.g. school newsletters etc.) will increase response rates and
make the data more meaningful for schools.
• Parents/caregivers can complete the survey as soon as they have received an invitation
and do not need to wait until the official open date of 22 July.
• A Supplementary survey has been created for use when a parent/caregiver has not received
or cannot locate their invitation. For a link to this survey refer to the Supplementary Survey
Section below. This link can be distributed to any parent/caregiver. To access the survey,
parents/caregivers need to enter the EQID of their eldest child at the school. EQIDs are
validated to ensure that there is only one response per family. Please note that responses
with an invalid EQID are not accepted during processing.
