Principal's Desk
Welcome to Week 6!
Principal messages
A reminder that over weeks 5 and 6, we have been focusing on the PBL Expectation of: - Be Respectful.
Thank you to all parents who have been contacting teachers for appointments or schoolwork to help support their child. It is also good to make an appointment to speak to your child's teacher as well.
Respect is a cornerstone value that shapes our children into thoughtful, considerate, and responsible individuals. As teachers, parents and guardians, we play a pivotal role in instilling this essential quality. Here are some practical tips to help you teach your child respect at home:
- Lead by Example - Children learn by observing the behaviour of those around them. Demonstrate respect in your interactions with others, whether it’s showing courtesy to a stranger or listening attentively to a family member. Your actions speak louder than words.
- Practice Active Listening - Encourage your child to listen when others are speaking. Teach them to make eye contact, avoid interrupting, and respond thoughtfully. By practicing active listening, children learn to value others' opinions and feelings.
- Teach Polite Language - Simple words like "please," "thank you," "excuse me," and "sorry" go a long way in showing respect. Reinforce the use of polite language in everyday conversations and acknowledge your child when they use it correctly.
- Establish and Enforce Boundaries - Setting boundaries teaches children to respect limits and understand the consequences of their actions. Clearly communicate household rules and expectations, and be consistent in enforcing them. This helps children learn self-discipline and respect for others' space and belongings.
- Foster Empathy - Encourage your child to consider how their actions affect others. Discuss different scenarios and ask how they would feel in someone else’s shoes. Developing empathy helps children understand and respect the feelings and perspectives of others.
- Acknowledge and Praise Respectful Behaviour - Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool. When your child demonstrates respectful behaviour, acknowledge it with praise. This not only boosts their self-esteem but also reinforces the importance of respect.
- Address Disrespectful Behaviour Promptly - When disrespectful behaviour occurs, address it calmly and promptly. Explain why the behaviour is unacceptable and discuss more respectful alternatives. Consistent and constructive feedback helps children learn and grow.
- Encourage Responsibility and Accountability - Give your child age-appropriate responsibilities at home. When they take ownership of tasks and understand the importance of fulfilling their duties, they develop respect for themselves and others. Encourage them to apologize and make amends when they make mistakes.
- Discuss Respectful Media Consumption - Monitor the media your child consumes and discuss the messages portrayed. Highlight examples of respectful and disrespectful behaviour in TV shows, movies, and online content. This can be a valuable teaching moment for understanding and practicing respect in various contexts.
- Celebrate Diversity - Teach your child to appreciate and respect differences in others, whether it's cultural, racial, or individual differences. Encourage open-mindedness and teach them to value the uniqueness of every person.
By implementing these tips, you can help your child develop a deep-rooted sense of respect that will benefit them throughout their lives. Remember, teaching respect is an ongoing process that requires patience, consistency and love.
Thank you for your continued support in fostering a respectful and nurturing environment for our students.

Eisteddfod
Eisteddfod 2024 (Instrumental Program)
Congratulations to our Instrumental students who competed in the Mackay Eisteddfod at Northern Beaches High School Performing Arts Centre on Sunday. The ensemble performed very well, taking home third place out of eight schools. Our beginner group received a highly commended award for their performance, showing great progress despite only having been learning this year. Being on the stage and performing in front of a large audience was a daunting but exciting experience for the students and they represented Slade Point with pride. Thank you to Miss Menzies for all her hard work in preparing the students for this big day!
Mrs Henderson
Hot on the heels of a successful “Afternoon Tunes” the Slade Point Choir was awarded Gold at the 2024 Eisteddfod! The choir sang two pieces, ‘Where the Sky Meets the Sea’ and ‘Gecko’, both by Australian composers. The adjudicator was impressed and awarded the choir a Gold certificate and the Perpetual Trophy which is displayed in the school foyer. The small but enthusiastic group has been working hard all year on these pieces and it has definitely paid off. Thank you to Miss Menzies for accompanying us on the piano and all the parents who came along to support.
